That’s why, this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we are shining a light on Milie Durante - Managing Partner at Florihana Distillery – who shared with us the unique role she has in the predominantly male oriented world of biodiversity
We’ve worked with Florihana, a leading supplier of essential oil to create a range of safe, high quality, pure and natural essential oils that enrich your sleep routine.
The Florihana Distillery is located in the French region of Provence, also known as the “French Riviera”. The distillery can be found on the Caussols plateau, an area naturally rich in biodiversity.

What is your role?
“I serve as a Managing Partner within our family business. My primary responsibility lies in steering the business development which encompasses spearheading the development of new products. My overarching goal is to ensure that we consistently uphold high standards by delivering exceptional products and services. I am deeply involved in every facet of the business, working to guarantee that our offerings align seamlessly with our clients' needs and expectations.”

What did you study and how did you end up working at Florihana?
“The path that led me to working at Florihana is deeply rooted in the family's entrepreneurial journey. Established by my parents in 1993, Florihana has been a part of my life since its inception and before joining four years ago, I worked in within the fragrance and skincare industry. Being part of Florihana is not just a professional commitment; it's a personal dedication to the legacy and values that my parents instilled in the business.”

What is the major advantage to “flash détente" process that our oils are subject to?
“The major advantage of the "flash détente" process lies in its ability to conduct steam distillations at exceptionally low temperatures, typically ranging between 40 °C and 80 °C. This innovative technology developed and perfected in-house, distinguishes itself as a unique and groundbreaking method within the realms of aromatherapy and cosmetics.
The key benefit of this process is that it allows us to extract volatile elements from plant materials at significantly lower temperatures than their normal boiling points. This is crucial in preventing the decomposition of these elements, thereby maintaining the integrity and characteristics of the molecules.
The end result is a product with molecular profiles closely resembling those produced by the plants themselves.

My best piece of advice for someone aspiring to make a career change or become more involved in biodiversity is to embark on the journey with curiosity, passion, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Biodiversity is a vast field, and being genuinely curious about the intricacies of the natural world will fuel your motivation. Start by educating yourself about biodiversity and sustainable practices.
